These pages list the descendants of Isabella Bruce (1849-1919) and James Smith (1836/7-1906). Isabella was the sister of my great-great father, John Bruce (1841/3-1912)[AN016]. Isabella and John had a brother called David (born 1845). I have not found any other records of David's life.

John, David and Isabella were all children of John Bruce [AN036] (born 1805, Kirkmichael parish, Perthshire; died 1874, Caputh parish, Perthshire)[AN036] and Elizabeth Robertson [AN037] (born 1816, Toberandonich, Dull parish, Perthshire; died 1896, Quarryhill, Forneth, Clunie parish, Perthshire), who married in 1841 in Caputh parish.

Isabella Bruce and James Smith were married in 1868 at Bank of Butterstone, Caputh parish, Perthshire. They had 10 children born between 1869 and 1891: three sons and seven daughters (see the family group sheet here). All the children were born at Laighwood farm, where James worked as a cattleman, part of the Duke of Atholl's Dunkeld Estate.  I have not found any records of one of the girls, Christian (or Christina), after the age of 6. Two of the other nine children, Agnes and Sam, never married and I have not found a record of either of them having had children.  The other seven children did marry, and five of them had children.  Not all the records of the grandchildren of Isabella and James Smith have been discovered but I have listed the details of the records of those I have so far discovered.

Sometime in the late 1890s Isabella and James moved from Laighwood to a cottage at Burnside of Forneth, in neighbouring Clunie parish.  They stayed there until their deaths and, after they died, their children stayed on in the cottage until the death of the last surviving child, Agnes, in 1950.  For more than half a century Burnside was visited by members of the extended family, including descendants of Isabella's brother John Bruce, by his youngest daughter, Isabella Bruce (born 1876 Dunfermline, Fife; died 1940 Errol, Perthshire) [AN009].  Isabella Bruce married Scot Symon [AN008] (1872-1955), contractor, Errol in 1899 in Inver church, Birnam (Little Dunkeld parish). Their daughter Ella was bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousin Grace Smith in 1929 in Perth.
