James S. Symon & Son

Peter McKay and Maurice Brewitt operating diggers in a field at Elliothead farm, near Bridge of Earn, Perthshire, summer 1961.  They are digging trenches to lay field drain pipes in.   (Photographer unknown, but probably farmer Bryce Sloan.)

Pete McKay was one of the longest serving employees of the firm, for whom he was still working when it closed in 1989.  He mostly worked as a digger driver.

Elliothead was owned by farmer Bryce Sloan.  He was a good client of the firm and had a lot of drainage work done.  He had a flying licence and once took my father up in his light aircraft.  Bryce Sloan's son, John, continued to farm Elliothead.   The farm is next to Oudenarde, once a farm where my great grandmother Cecilia Wanless was born in one of the farm cottages, later the site of Bridge of Earn hospital, and currently (2105) the site of a major housing development.

The firm got its first trencher in 1962.  Various trenchers were used over the years, latterly with laser levelling technology.  They were all operated by Alistair Robb, who retired shortly before the firm closed in 1989.  He lived in Perth, but died a number of years ago.   His wife was German.
